The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii stands with and for those who carry the burden of the Lost Child. We of Mary’s House open our doors and our hearts to you, standing with you, for Mary’s Bethlehem joy was Mary’s Calvary vigil of sorrow as well. We have faith in the power of prayer to heal the soul and faith in the comfort and support of a community coming together in solidarity.

Please join us for this very special time of reflection, healing and hope. We welcome you in the peace of Christ Jesus.

Presider: Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, Ph.D

This Pilgrimage to Mary’s House is a pilgrimage of solidarity. For Mary, too, has lost a son, but nevertheless, continues to hope in the promise of God.

Rev. Fragomeni, nationally acclaimed speaker, author, retreat master and teacher, is Rector of The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii and Associate Professor of Liturgy and Homiletics, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago.

Navigating the Labyrinth of Loss

Speaker: Maggie Kast

A car crashes, and Maggie Kast, at the peak of a modern dance career, loses a three-year-old daughter. Raised without religion and now mired in grief, she senses a persistent connection to the little girl, a love somehow more powerful than the brute fact of death. Maggie experienced loss so profound it led her on a deep spiritual journey, one that brought her into the Catholic Church as an adult. After the accident, her marriage is greatly stressed by the entrance of religion into married life. As she weaves her artistic self, newfound faith and love for her family together, Maggie is a beacon of hope and healing for those suffering the loss of a child or spouse.

Maggie Kast’s recently published memoir, The Crack Between the Worlds, describes in aching, measured tones, the loss of her three-year old daughter, her husband, and an adult son. Maggie earned a Master of Theological Studies (Word and Worship Concentration) from Catholic Theological Union. She teaches and tours sacred dance nationally and internationally, exploring the arts as a spiritual path. Following a lifetime career in concert and liturgical dance, Maggie earned an M.F.A. in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has published essays in America, Image Journal, Contact Quarterly and Writer’s Chronicle and fiction in The Sun, Nimrod International, Rosebud and others. She teaches Writing and Rhetoric part-time at Columbia College Chicago.
