Rosa Mystica
Dec 8 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Dear Patron,

We hope everyone is staying safe as we navigate the pandemic and vaccine distribution.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our Rosa Mystica: A Journey of Renewal and Restoration series so far.  We hope you found inspiration in the visual theology of Marian Art.

The purpose of Rosa Mystica in showcasing Marian art has been a source of spiritual nourishment for all who have participated.  Through her images, we can imagine Mary as a person, no more or less than any of us, but with an enormous capacity for inner tranquility that enabled her to act with courage, faith, and love.

We invite you to join us for our third lecture, Rosa Mystica: Mary Sorrowful Mother, on March 9, 2021, featuring Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh’s Pietà.  Inspired by Eugène Delacroix’s Pietà which he considered a true work of art, van Gogh created a modern version while also commenting on his own personal suffering from mental illness.

For this program, the Illinois Patrons is proud to host:

Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, PhD, Rector of The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii in Chicago, a local site of Marian devotion.  The Shrine is unique in that it is a destination Church for pilgrimage and spiritual reflection in the ethical values of compassion, peace, care for creation, justice, and solidarity with the poor.

Dr. Rebecca Long, the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Associate Curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, will also offer artistic perspectives on the Pietà.  As curator of the Art Institute’s recent El Greco exhibit, her expertise will provide us with insight into the artist’s imagination.

We will also update you on the status of The Annunciation restoration and recent discoveries that may verify its 16th century Italian origin.  This painting is being restored by The Conservation of Chicago through the generosity of the Mazza Foundation.

Advent Day of Reflection, via Zoom
Dec 12 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

So, What’s Birthing?

Meister Eckhart boldly suggests that we are all meant to be mothers of God – For God is forever needing to be born. And contemporary theologian Jack Shea describes Advent as Lamaze classes for believers.

To the extent that these two wise characters are onto something – and I am convinced that they are – then it would behoove us and serve the world if we were to take seriously the adventure and privilege and holy obligation of Advent by contemplating and cooperating with a God who is eager and desperate to enter into our lives – beautiful and chaotic – this season.

Please join us as we celebrate this mystery and ask ourselves how we are invited and called to Birth a bit of the Divine into a world in need of the same.

Presenter: Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson

Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson challenges us to enter more deeply into the mystery of grace, the mystery of God through storytelling, poetry, and humor. Working with parents, teachers, pastoral staff and faith communities Dr. Nelson-Johnson designs and conducts formation programs that encourage, affirm, and inspire. The author and leader of the acclaimed Beloved retreat, he is the Founder as well as Creative & Animating Partner of Soul Play LLC, which can be found at soulplayonline.com. Dr. Nelson-Johnson is also Resident Theologian and Animator of Faith at Old St. Patrick’s Church.
