THE MIRACLE OF SAN GENNARO, ITALIAN MARTYR, UNIVERSAL CHAMPION, A VIRTUAL EVENT
Sep 19 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Bishop Januarius I of Benevento, San Gennaro to the Italian community, knew what he was risking when he visited imprisoned Christians during the brutal persecution of Emperor Diocletian. What he did not know was that the blood that flowed from his martyred body would to this day be a miraculous relic that twice a year bubbles up in the vials in which it was collected on the day he died. The people of Naples, Italy, where the body of San Gennaro is preserved, pray to him for protection from natural disasters of every kind, including the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and the devastation of plagues.

Saturday, September 19 is the anniversary of his birth into eternal life. Join us on that day from 1 to 3 p.m. as Fr. Richard Fragomeni, assisted by Fr. Jerry Boland, takes us on a virtual journey into the life, and the death, of San Gennaro. View a relic from his body and a video of his bubbling blood. Pray with us for the intercession of San Gennaro in our own plague, COVID-19. Celebrate with The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii this Italian saint who, through his miraculous blood, is our powerful champion… Please join us!

All are welcome!

Led by Fr. Richard N. Fragomeni, assisted by Fr. Jerry Boland.

Fr. Richard Fragomeni, Shrine Rector, Nationally acclaimed speaker, author, retreat master and teacher; Professor of Liturgy and Preaching, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, Adjunct faculty, Dept. of Religious Studies, De Paul University.

Fr. Jerry Boland, Frequent traveler to Italy, a place he truly loves, he is currently the pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview. He has served the Archdiocese of Chicago in many ways since his ordination on May 13, 1981, including Associate Dean of Formation at Mundelein Seminary, Executive Secretary of the Priest Placement Board, Archbishop’s Delegate for Extern and International Priests and Chairman of the Presbyteral Council.

Rosa Mystica
Oct 1 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Dear Patron,

We hope everyone is staying safe as we navigate the pandemic and vaccine distribution.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our Rosa Mystica: A Journey of Renewal and Restoration series so far.  We hope you found inspiration in the visual theology of Marian Art.

The purpose of Rosa Mystica in showcasing Marian art has been a source of spiritual nourishment for all who have participated.  Through her images, we can imagine Mary as a person, no more or less than any of us, but with an enormous capacity for inner tranquility that enabled her to act with courage, faith, and love.

We invite you to join us for our third lecture, Rosa Mystica: Mary Sorrowful Mother, on March 9, 2021, featuring Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh’s Pietà.  Inspired by Eugène Delacroix’s Pietà which he considered a true work of art, van Gogh created a modern version while also commenting on his own personal suffering from mental illness.

For this program, the Illinois Patrons is proud to host:

Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, PhD, Rector of The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii in Chicago, a local site of Marian devotion.  The Shrine is unique in that it is a destination Church for pilgrimage and spiritual reflection in the ethical values of compassion, peace, care for creation, justice, and solidarity with the poor.

Dr. Rebecca Long, the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Associate Curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, will also offer artistic perspectives on the Pietà.  As curator of the Art Institute’s recent El Greco exhibit, her expertise will provide us with insight into the artist’s imagination.

We will also update you on the status of The Annunciation restoration and recent discoveries that may verify its 16th century Italian origin.  This painting is being restored by The Conservation of Chicago through the generosity of the Mazza Foundation.
