Dear Friends of the Shrine,

Many years ago when a great famine struck the land of Sicily, villagers immediately turned to their beloved Saint Joseph for help. The villagers prayed for rain to grow crops and vowed that, if it rained, they would hold a special feast in his honor. The great banquet in honor of St. Joseph became an annual tradition—one that we have carried on here at the Shrine for years.

Just as the Sicilians prayed for help, we too must focus our thoughts and prayers on help for those afflicted with the COVID-19 or Coronavirus. Recently, the Archdiocese sent us guidelines on how to approach our social environments during Mass. Reviewing those guidelines and observing how others across our city are approaching social or large person events, we at the Shrine have made a difficult and heartfelt decision. In taking an overabundance of caution, we have decided to cancel this year’s St. Joseph’s Table event.

This was an incredibly difficult decision for us to make, in large part because 9% of our annual fundraising donations come from the contributions we receive from attendees. However, the number one concern we have is for the health and safety of our Shrine community. Mitigating any risk is our priority.

Each year we donate 10% of our net proceeds to St. Joseph’s Workshop, an organization that “seeks to give support to those who need to overcome obstacles when seeking assistance.”

We are grateful to those who have already made their support through a donation by mail. If you would like to donate to St. Joseph Table to help us meet our goal and assist the St. Joseph’s Workshop ministry, please click here – St. Joseph Table donation.

St. Joseph lived a life of great humility and devotion to his Holy Family. We pray to St. Joseph, the patron saint of the sick, as we devote our thoughts and prayers to our Shrine family and to those around us who are impacted by this health challenge.

Please make note that for March 15, 2020 we will return to our regular mass times of 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

May the Lord bless and keep you,

Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, PhD

P.S. Make sure to keep washing your hands, while saying the Lord’s Prayer, which takes 20 seconds.
