The Shrine of our Lady of Pompeii - Santuario Della Beata Vergine Di PompeiMarian Appeal 2017

Dear Friends of the Shrine:

Greetings and peace from Mary’s Chicago Shrine of the Rosary!

This year marks a century of faith, since the apparitions and miracle of Our Lady of Fatima: 100 years ago in 1917! Five generations have grown up since Mary reminded us to pray the rosary ‘especially for those most in need.’

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, said of Our Lady of Fatima, while visiting her Shrine for the centenary celebration: “Whenever we look to Mary, we come to believe once again in the revolutionary nature of love and tenderness. In her, we see that humility and tenderness are not virtues of the weak, but of the strong, who need not treat others poorly in order to feel important themselves.”

Here at The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii we also honor the Queen of the Holy Rosary. At Fatima and Pompeii, discover in Mary the shining face of God-With-Us. She reflects our human dignity back to us, embracing us with her love and tenderness.

In order to honor Mary and commemorate and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fatima, our Chicago shrine will solemnly pray a novena, nine days of prayer, to Our Lady.

It will begin on Sunday, August 13th, with our regular Sunday schedule: 8:30 and 11 a.m, then continue Monday 8.14 – Noon, 8.15 – Noon, Feast of the Assumption (a Holy Day of Obligation), 8.16 – 6 p.m., 8.17 & 8.18 – Noon, 8.19 – 7:30 a.m., Sunday, 8.20 – regular schedule: 8:30 and 11 a.m; concluding on Monday, August 21st  at Noon. It will be a special time of prayer and intercession to Mary, whose Shrine we keep here in Chicago.

Please join us!

You may pray the novena with us in these ways:

  • Visit our Shrine church in Chicago’s Little Italy each day for the novena Masses;
  • Or, pray with us in spirit, using the novena prayer and schedule of intentions that follow.

We hope you will join us!

But, in any case, please print out and mail us the enclosed remit card with your intentions provided (include your name and address), so that we may pray for you and with you, during this Fatima Rosary centenary.

It’s a great joy to me that our Shrine ministry reaches out and comforts those in need in so many ways with our unique programs, like this novena. Won’t you please help us continue our Shrine ministry with a generous gift today?

We do our mission by assisting those suffering from physical, emotional or mental illness, supporting men and women who grieve the death of a spouse or a child, and collecting for a monthly food drive for the local pantry in this historic neighborhood, the majority of its recipients being the elderly and poor.

Thank you for allowing this all to happen, by your generous support through the years.

Your gift makes it possible for us to reach out beyond our walls, loving, caring and supporting one another. Together we live God’s mercy for our world. Please consider giving deeply and generously from your heart, this time, as we pray for peace in these troubled times during this August novena to Mary, Queen of the Rosary.

Our dear Mother Mary is an anchor of our faith in Jesus Christ, calling us to reach out to one another. I have seen her example in you at our Shrine! Let Mary continue to be a source of our strength, turning us always from indifference to being grace, hope and mercy for each other.

With gratitude and joy, I remain,

Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, Ph.D.

P.S. I thank you in advance for your generous gift and please be sure to send us your prayer intentions for this holy time of prayer.

P.P.S. During this novena we will also celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15, a Holy Day of Obligation, with the Mass at 12 noon, and our annual Prayer Walk with Mary on Saturday, August 19.

The Marian Prayer of Pope John Paul II

Mother of the Redeemer,
with great joy we call you blessed.

In order to carry out His plan of salvation,
God the Father chose you

before the creation of the world.
You believed in His love and obeyed His word.

The Son of God desired you for His Mother
when He became man to save the human race.
You received Him

with ready obedience and undivided heart.

The Holy Spirit loved you as

His mystical spouse
and filled you with singular gifts.
You allowed yourself to be led
by His hidden powerful action.

To you, Mother of human family

and of the nations,
we confidently entrust the whole humanity,
with its hopes and fears.
Do not let it lack the light of true wisdom.
Guide its steps in the ways of peace.
Enable all to meet Christ,
the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Sustain us, O Virgin Mary,

on our journey of faith

and obtain for us the grace of eternal salvation.
O clement, O loving,

O sweet Mother of God and our Mother, Mary!

~ John Paul II
